In light of Nigeria’s ongoing performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, table tennis legend, Chief Waheed Ekun, has made an impassioned plea to both the Nigerian public and the nation’s leaders to give greater attention and support to sports beyond football.
Chief Ekun made his appeal during an interview with our correspondent, Oluwasemiloore Ige while reflecting on the achievements of Nigerian athletes in various disciplines at the Olympics, he stressed the need for more comprehensive support for sports like table tennis, athletics, and others that often do not receive as much attention as football.
“Nigerian athletes have shown remarkable talent across a wide range of sports, and their performances in Paris should be a wake-up call,” said Chief Ekun. “It is time for us as a nation to broaden our focus and provide the necessary resources, infrastructure, and encouragement for all sports.”
The veteran table tennis player, who has been a prominent figure in Nigerian sports for decades, expressed his concerns that the country’s overwhelming focus on football has left other sports underfunded and underdeveloped. He emphasized that the potential for success in these sports is immense, citing the determination and skill exhibited by Nigerian Olympians.
Chief Ekun urged the government to invest in grassroots programs, training facilities, and coaching for a variety of sports, which he believes would not only enhance Nigeria’s international sporting reputation but also foster unity and pride within the nation
