JOHN Okafor popularly known as Mr. Ibu was a prolific Nigerian actor and comedian, having appeared in over 200 Nollywood films, including the famous Mr. Ibu series.

 

In his early life, after completing elementary school and facing the loss of his father, he moved to Sapele where he undertook various menial jobs to support his education and family.

 

His diverse work experiences ranged from hair styling to photography and working in a crate production company.

Despite facing financial difficulties, he initially enrolled in the College of Education, Yola, and later pursued studies at the Institute of Management and Technology.

 

Mr. Ibu’s illustrious career included memorable roles in numerous Nollywood films such as Mr. Ibu (2004), Mr. Ibu 2 (2005), Mr. Ibu and His Son, Coffin Producers, Husband Suppliers, International Players, Mr. Ibu in London (2005), Police Recruit (2003), 9 Wives (2005), Ibu in Prison (2006), and Keziah (2007).

 

Known as “Nigeria’s Borat,” Okafor expressed strong views on homosexuality in Nollywood in 2012, likening it to a virus and advocating for its cessation.

In October 2023, Okafor revealed health challenges that threatened the amputation of one of his legs, seeking public support for prayers and financial assistance.

 

The Abubakar Bukola Saraki Foundation covered his hospital bill, but ongoing assistance was required for his sustained care and treatment abroad.

 

Facing a serious illness that necessitated seven surgeries, Okafor underwent a leg amputation in November 2023.

 

He passed away on March 2, 2024, at Evercare Hospital in Lagos, succumbing to cardiac arrest.
