President Bola Tinubu’s former Campaign Spokesman in the southeast, Dr. Josef Onoh has appealed to the President to intervene on the incessant terrorist attacks on the communities at the boundary between Benue and Enugu states.
Onoh made the appeal following President Tinubu’s visit to Benue state, on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 after series of banditry attacks by suspected headers who in their latest operation killed over 200 persons in Yelewata, Guma local government area of the state, last Friday.
He revealed to the President that in case he does not know or perhaps may have forgotten, that Enugu state boundary communities with Benue state such as in Isi-Uzo local government area of Enugu State have since 2017 been constantly attacked by bandits from Benue state with over 250 persons killed, many kidnapped and so many women rapped even to death.
Onoh said that between 2017 and 2022, suspected Fulani militias attacked over 20 farm settlements in Eha-Amufu communities of Enugu state, resulting in several deaths.
The attacks have continued over the years, with a significant incident occurring on December 8, 2022, where 23 persons lost their lives in one village, and another attack on November 22, 2024, which killed three farmers; and the latest two quick succession incidents in June 2025 at Mgbuji and Aguamede Eha-Amufu that claimed over 20 lives.
Onoh said that the Bandits’ attacks from the North Central region had since spilled into Enugu and other parts of South East states, pointing at the persistent killings of the farming communities in Uzo-Uwani local government area of the same Enugu State.
Despite their massacre of over 15 persons at Ikpakpara Aguamede Eha-Amufu Isi-Uzo LGA, on Sunday, there is fear from the affected communities that the bandits have been regrouping to unleash further attack in Isi-Uzo communities boarding Benue state is a cause for concern.
“I therefore urged Mr. President to extend your hand of fellowship to Enugu State, not to visit it or to declare state of emergency, but to support Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State with more support of personnel and security apparatus to deal with the insurgency in the state, my friendship with the governor spans over two decades and I can assure you he’s equal to the task and will definitely not play politics with the lives of the residents and people of Enugu State.

“It was for reasons like this that threw up IPOB and the unknown gunmen saga. The Enugu state government alone can not contain these insurgencies without the assistance of the federal government. The state government has been doing its best but requires federal assistance before it will be overwhelmed and spread to other states such as Abia, Imo, and other states in the South East. Every human life is sacred, unique and irreplaceable gift deserving of dignity and respect,” Onoh said.
