Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has distributed 7,158 red goats to 2,386 women as part of the second phase of the Women Empowerment Initiative under the Livestock Fattening Programme of the Kano Agro-Pastoral Development Project.
In a statement on Tuesday, the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa, revealed that the initiative, valued at N2.3 billion, is designed to combat poverty and promote economic self-reliance across the state.
Under the programme, women from all 44 local government areas of Kano received livestock, with each beneficiary allocated three goats to aid their efforts in livestock entrepreneurship.

Dawakin-Tofa highlighted that future phases would include the distribution of 1,342 cows and 1,822 rams to women and youth in the state.
“He warned the beneficiaries against using the livestock for other purposes, stressing the need for accountability and responsibility in the programme,” the statement said.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to reducing poverty through innovative and inclusive approaches.
“By integrating women and youth into the agricultural value chain, the programme aims to enhance household income and reduce dependency on government aid,” he said.
