Chelsea confirm Billy Gilmour contract extension

Chelsea have announced that they have activated an extension clause in Billy Gilmour’s contract, tying him to the club until 2024.

The 21-year-old’s deal was set to expire at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, but Chelsea have moved to extend his contract by a further year.

The Scot joined the Blues after turning 16 back in 2017 and impressed plenty at youth level. He was handed his senior debut by Frank Lampard during the 2019/20 season and put in some great displays, notably picking up man of the match awards against Liverpool and Everton prior to the pandemic.

Gilmour made 22 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions during the 2019/20 and 2020/21 campaigns, earning himself a Champions League winners’ medal before starring for Scotland at the delayed Euro 2020 last summer.

Thomas Tuchel opted to loan Gilmour out to newly-promoted Norwich for the 2021/22 season, but the midfielder struggled in what was already a subpar Canaries side. He featured 24 times in the Premier League as Dean Smith’s side were relegated back to the Championship.

Gilmour returns to Chelsea with fierce competition for his place. N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley remain Tuchel’s senior options in central midfield, while Conor Gallagher  fresh from his sensational loan at Crystal Palace will also get the chance to prove his worth in pre-season.
